Facts About The Indiana State Quarter

Indiana State Quarter Released

Commemorating the Hoosier State

Released on August 2, 2002

The official State Quarter of Indiana was released on August 2, 2002, marking the 19th coin in the U.S. 50 State Quarters program.

Enacted by Public Law 2534 on December 1, 1997, the 50 State Quarters program celebrated each state through the release of unique quarter designs featuring state symbols and landmarks.

Indiana's State Quarter depicts the state flower, a large red carnation, in the center. The carnation is surrounded by the state motto, "The Crossroads of America," and the years "1816" and "2002," representing the year Indiana became a state and the year the quarter was released, respectively.

The reverse of the quarter features the historic "Hoosier Gym" in Knightstown, Indiana. Affectionately known as "The Barn," the Hoosier Gym has hosted local basketball tournaments since 1922 and is considered by many to be the birthplace of Indiana's basketball tradition.

The Indiana State Quarter was well-received by collectors and the public, becoming a popular addition to the 50 State Quarters collection. It remains a sought-after coin today, serving as a commemorative memento of Indiana's rich history and cultural heritage.
