NASA Announces Discovery of New Exoplanet with Potential for Life

Astronomers have discovered a new exoplanet, GJ 357 d, located just 31 light-years from Earth.

The exoplanet orbits a red dwarf star and is located within the habitable zone, meaning it could potentially sustain liquid water on its surface.

The discovery was made using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which monitors thousands of stars for signs of exoplanets. GJ 357 d is the second exoplanet discovered in the GJ 357 system, joining the previously known GJ 357 b.

GJ 357 d is about the size of Earth and has a similar mass. Its orbit around its star takes 55.7 days, and it receives about the same amount of radiation from its star as Mars does from the Sun.

The discovery of GJ 357 d is significant because it is the closest exoplanet to Earth that is located within the habitable zone. This makes it a prime target for future study to determine if it could potentially support life.
