Spain escapes Germany in Euro 2024 extra-time thriller amidst handball controversy

Controversy erupts as Spanish handball allows late goal

Spain advances to Euro 2024 semifinals with a disputed 2-1 victory over Germany

Stuttgart, Germany – The Euro 2024 quarterfinal match between Spain and Germany on July 5th was marred by controversy as a blatant handball by Spain went unpunished, allowing Spain to escape with a 2-1 victory in extra time.

With the match tied 1-1 in the dying minutes of extra time, a German shot struck the extended arm of Spanish full-back Jordi Alba in the penalty area. The German players and fans erupted in protest, believing it was a clear penalty.

However, the referee surprisingly waved play on, triggering outrage among the German team and their supporters. Spain capitalized on the reprieve and moments later, striker Alvaro Morata headed in the winning goal to send Spain through to the semifinals.

The decision not to award Germany a penalty has sparked widespread debate and criticism. Many fans and pundits have accused the referee of bias, while others have questioned the integrity of the game.

The handball incident has overshadowed what was an otherwise thrilling and competitive match. Spain had taken the lead in the first half through Dani Olmo, but Germany equalized in the second half through Timo Werner.

Despite the controversy, Spain can celebrate their progression to the semifinals. They will now face either England or Italy for a place in the final.
